Food Addiction - My Approach

Food addiction, as a term I use, tells you how I see the challenges that face you and me as not just a matter of will power. Let me tell you on this page a bit about what it is like to work with me and how we achieve your goals. Scientific research has closed in on how certain foods literally hijack your body and your brain through biochemical processes as well as genetic differences among people that facilitate the addiction process with food. The food industry in the USA has not helped us much either since it is well documented they create foods with ingredients that stimulate our appetites.  This creates a vicious cycle consisting of desire, overeating and loss of control that is one of the hallmarks of any addiction process as well as food addiction.

Additionally the advertising industry facilitates and supports an environment of overeating for the most part. Also our well meaning friends and family may create an environment that supports overeating. Finally the way we think impacts how we behave, thus being uninformed on matters related to eating as well as having irrational thoughts or beliefs can contribute to addiction to food since it impacts how you feel and behave. Bottom line, you did not decide when you were a young child that you would one day become a food addict so it definitely is not your fault.

All the above said, now that you are here and know what you know, you have a decision to make about what type of life you want to lead and what type of consequences you want to live with given you are or may be a person with a food addiction. That is the first thing you need to get clear about in deciding if change is what you want. You don’t have to know the answer to that question since we can work on that question together. Another way to say it is “what are you committed to really” is often the way I put it. If the answer is you want a life that involves some level of freedom from addiction to food then I promise you we can design a customized and holistic plan for you that you can implement one day at a time.

I will stay with you over time to assure that your plan becomes the new “normal, natural and habit” to you just like what you do today as a food addict is normal, natural and habit to you. I will not be doing psychotherapy with you on the telephone, although I am credentialed to deliver psychotherapy treatment by telephone. If together we determine you need psychotherapy for issues then we will get you to a psychotherapist that is qualified to work with you preferably in person.
