Food Addiction Recovery – #23

People with food addiction really benefit from leaning about the basic 3 types of foods – protein, carbohydrates and most importantly fats. You might want to buy a booklet with fat grams in addition to calories listed for foods if you go to restaurants. If you go to fast food outlets they do have nutritional information available if you ask for it or you can look it up online at your favorite fast food outlet. Now I don’t recommend fast food places and if I am traveling I have found Wendy’s to be a place I can get a low calorie meal. You can look up the fat gram content of individual foods as well as all the nutritional information you need in food addiction recovery here. As a food addict knowing calories are essential has been my experience. While calories do count, it is equally as important to reduce fat in your diet. It is usually good to look for ways to decrease your intake of fat grams, particularly the types of fats in highly processed foods. These fats tend to be “partially hydrogenated,” a form of fat not found in nature that is particularly bad for your body.

Food Addiction Folks Need Fat Calories

When reading your labels for fats, however, make sure that the fat calories haven’t simply been replaced with sugar calories—too much sugar is bad for you, too. Eating whole, minimally processed foods is the best way to eliminate most kinds of undesirable fats and extra sugars from your diet. For a food addict it is really a game of counting calories and fat grams we are looking for here since fat has more calories per gram than either carbohydrates or protein. That said everyone needs some fat calories even compulsive overeaters. How many? Well, that is debatable. I have seen experts say 10% and I have seen experts say 30%. I go for 20% – split the difference! If you are like the average American you are getting 45% of your calories from fat (almost all the bad kind of fat) and that is not good. I do take one tablespoon of oil each day that is made up of a mixture of healthy oils – my brand is Udo’s Oil 3-6-9 Blend. So don’t think you need no fat at all just because you have a food addiction. Next more on calories.
